Researchers at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine have identified a stem cell mutation that triggers uterine fibroids. The mutation is called MED12. This is the first time that a molecular trigger for fibroids has been identified.
The fibroid research at Northwestern is chaired by Dr. Serdar Bulun. When I met with Dr. Bulun in 2010, I was struck by his compassion. He told me that, “If I don’t do my job (as a researcher), surgery becomes necessary.” He further indicated that surgery should really be a last resort. Clearly, with the strides that his team has made with this new study, they are truly pursuing solutions to the debilitating issue of uterine fibroids. I applaud their efforts.
The complete study published by PLoS One can be found here.
I remain encouraged that we will find a cure. We have to.
Be Well,
Sateria
