Fibroid Healthcare Costs

Recently there was an article in U.S. News & World Report based on an American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology report about the cost impact of fibroids on Healthcare in the U.S.  Not surprisingly the figures are staggering…

“Uterine fibroids are a significant economic drain on the U.S. health care system, costing anywhere from $5.9 billion to $34.4 billion a year, according to a new report.

The costs come largely from lost work and disability but also include medical treatment as well as obstetric complications, said the report, which appears in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

“Fibroids are one of the most costly conditions even at the lower limit of $5.1 billion, which is a considerable expense,” said study.”

The article goes on to mention that surgeries, “…result in 30,000 myomectomies…and 200,000 hysterectomies …among U.S. women each year.”

I believe that diet, exercise and awareness can prevent many of these statistics.  I am proof that it does work.  (If you are in health crisis, a medical solution may be more realistic at this time.  Holisitic remedies can take some weeks or months to take effect.  As always, please consult your physician.  Anemia, and other symptoms of fibroids can be dangerous, and should be monitored closely by a professional).

When selecting and visiting your doctors Ladies, please research your options thoroughly. Weigh your immediate health status against your long term goals. Always seek more than one opinion. I’ve found that it is also beneficial to work with both medical and holistic professionals.

There is important research underway to hopefully change these statistics. I weigh the research source, goals and methods when evaluating the information that I receive.  As The Fibroid Foundation continues to expand its network of trusted professionals, I will update you with any helpful information.

As always, Be Well…

“The concept of total wellness recognizes that our every thought, word, and behavior affects our greater health and well-being.  And we in turn, are affected not only emotionally but also physically and spiritually.
