Days For Girls Founder, Celeste Mergens, Shares Her Fibroids Story

Days for Girls International is an international organization providing access to menstrual care for women and girls around the world. Our founder recently met with Days For Girls founder, Celeste Mergens.
Not surprisingly, Celeste too has a fibroids story. She was kind enough to share it with us:⠀

“I promote women’s health every day as part of the organization Days for Girls. But when I hit peri-menopause and experienced extremely heavy menses flow for the first time in my life, I didn’t know about fibroids.

I had to leave important meetings to change pads at the 20-minute mark and still sometimes bled through. Even a pad and two tampons could only manage for about 20 minutes. Switching to a menstrual cup helped a lot, managing the heavy flow better, but I was starting to have symptoms of anemia. It was only then that I went to the doctor because I had honestly thought that it was a symptom of peri-menopause. I endured it for over a year before going in. It turned out that I had fibroids.

Thankfully, I had a doctor who advised removing the fibroids as a first action step before considering more radical surgery like a hysterectomy. She explained that our reproductive system balances many things that help with women’s health. Giving removal of the fibroids a chance before choosing to disturb the whole system turned out to be a wise step for me. I wish that I had known earlier about the chances of fibroids being the culprit. Fibroid awareness and intervention makes a big difference. It sure did for me!”⠀

Many thanks to Celeste and the amazing Days For Girls organization.⠀
Together, we are erasing the stigma around menstruation. ⠀
